Nine Things You Can Still Do Only on Android

Nine Things You Can Still Do Only on Android

The new iPhones reached Indian markets recently and there's definitely a lot to like about them. In many ways iOS is starting to resemble like Android, with like extensions and third-party keyboards, while Android is looking to close the gap on iOS in terms of design with the new Material Design philosophy.

Though the two system are starting to resemble each other, Android's famously "open" ecosystem still gives many more options in terms of the kind of apps that are possible on the platform. Here are a few things you still can't do on iOS devices.
1. Smarten up your home screen
One of the big differences between iOS and Android is how customisable the latter is. You can install a launcher that replaces your home screen, and there are a number of different reasons to do this too. An app like Nova Launcher lets you customise almost all the elements of your home screen, such as the size of the grid, the number of icons in the dock, adding widgets to the dock and much more. Others, like Yahoo Aviate andEverythingMe customise your homescreen to show you the apps that you need, before you even know you need them.
aviate-app-635.jpg
2. Automate everything
On the iPhone, you can install IFTTT and automate some of the functions on your phone. It's pretty neat but also fairly limited. If you want to do more though, then you should check out Android apps like Tasker and Llama. Tasker is a paid app, but Llama is free - both are powerful automation tools. You can set up a geofence to turn your phone's Wi-Fi on when you're near your home or office, and keep it off the rest of the time to conserve battery. And you could disable the password when your phone is connected to the home Wi-Fi, for easy access, but re-enable it when you're outdoors, so your phone is never unlocked when you're not at home. Give it access to your calendar and you can have it keep quiet in meetings, and using your location it can automatically go silent when you're inside a cinema hall.
tasker_android.jpg
3. Make calls easier
We lose sight of the fact that our phones are still used to make calls. But calling someone from an iPhone still means either searching through your contacts, or dialling a number from memory. Android phone makers usually put their own diallers which have different features, but you can also turn to apps like Dialer+ and Ready Contact List to add functionality. With Dialer+, for example, you get a T9 dialer so you can use the same keypad to either enter a contact's name or phone number, and it searches your contacts and shows matches while you dial.
dialer_plus.jpg
4. Smarter SMS
Along with calls, your SMS service can also be customised completely by Android apps. For example, Hello SMS comes with features like an automatic night mode where the screen switches to white text on a black background, tabbed view to quickly see messages from different senders, and automatically switching to instant-messaging over the Internet when connecting to another person who uses Hello.Messages+ from the same company that makes Dialer+, is an excellent SMS replacement app too. You can send free IMs to other Messages+ users, and it also integrates with WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, so you can see people's updates all in one place.
India Against Spam sounds like a political slogan, but this cool app is actually super handy if you're getting bugged by too many ads over SMS or calls. Authorities are cracking down on DND offenders, but it's still cumbersome to type out a complaint every time. India Against Spam gives you a one-touch option to do the same thing.
india_against_spam.jpg
5. Download Torrents
There are a lot of different legal torrents available, through which you can download software or free media. Downloading these torrents on an iPhone isn't possible though - you'll have to use a workaround such as using a webapp or Dropbox to trigger your desktop torrent software via a 'watch' folder. If you're an Android user though, the download can take place right on your phone, with the official BitTorrent app on Google Play. The popular movie torrent service Popcorn Time is also available for Android users - and the simple interface makes it particularly well suited to use on a mobile device.
6. A full-fledged media centre
There are a lot of great media player available for smartphones and tablets but if you're looking for a full featured media centre that can manage your playlists, download metadata, subtitles and lyrics, load streams from a number of sources (both legal and otherwise) and make sharing your media simple, then nothing comes close to XBMC. And unless you've jailbroken your iPhone, you're not getting it. Android users can side=load the official XBMC app, or they can install TVMC instead. TVMC is XBMC with a lot of the settings and additional streams already downloaded - so you don't have to figure out how to use repositories and add-ons.
xbmc_home.jpg
7. Fully enjoy Google Now
Apple users aren't cut off from Google Now - you just have to launch the Google app to see your cards and recommendations, but Android users get to enjoy the full benefits. Google Now is one of the most compelling - some might say creepy - things about Google's services, and it's amazing how useful it can get over time, popping up cards as and when you need them. Integrate with Android Wear  for even more effective use. Other fully-functional virtual assistants like Shifu are also only possible on Android.
8. Manage files
With iOS 8, Apple introduced iCloud Drive, that lets apps share files with each other. But there's still no way to browse the files stored on your local device. On Android, using the default file manager can be fairly confusing, but thanks to apps like ES File Explorer you can find everything with a simple swipe. ES File Explorer is our favourite file management app, and aside from the basic functions of browsing and editing the contents of your storage, it also lets you see all the media or documents in one place, making it easy to keep track of your data.
es_file_explorer.jpg
9. Control your phone from your PC
Apps like AirDroid and Pushbullet make it simple to have your different devices working together. You can share files, pictures and more between devices, install apps on your phone from your desktop, send SMS messages from your computer, or share clipboards across devices. Apple users can experience this with the new Continuity features in iOS 8, but you need to be locked into multiple Apple devices for that to work.

These are our favourite Android-only apps - if you know of Android apps, or if you use some essential iPhone apps that Android users are missing out on, let us know via the comments.

Xperia UL launched

Sony Xperia UL launched with full-HD screen and quad-core processor

Sony-Xperia-UL.jpg
Sony has launched a new smartphone, Xperia UL, in the Japanese market with carrier KDDI.

Just like the recently launched Xperia A and Xperia ZR, this phone is also water and dust resistant and can withstand 1.5 metres of still water for 30 minutes. The phone is inline with Sony's new design philosophy that we've seen in phones such as the Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia A and Xperia ZR and has the same signature aluminium power button that resembles a watch crown. It also features a thin strip towards the bottom which is essentially an LED light that lights up in different colours just like the Xperia SP.

It's powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 quad-core processor and has 2GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The smartphone features a 13.1-megapixel rear camera with Exmor RS for mobile and a VGA front facing camera. It offers 16GB of internal storage expandable up to 64GB via memory card (microSD / microSDHC / microSDXC ). The phone features NFC, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, Infrared and 4G LTE connectivity options. It has a 2300mAh battery. The phone will be available in White, Pink and Black colours and will be available starting May 25 in Japan. There's no word on the phone's international availability as of now.

The phone had leaked in pictures a few days back on a Chinese website, while rumours of its existence had emerged in March.

Samsung-Galaxy-Mega.jpg
Samsung is expected to launch a number of smartphones under the umbrella of its Galaxy S4 smartphone, and even before the company officially announces them a new report reveals the release timeline of these phones.

Samsung focused blog SamMobile has got hold of an official list from insiders that has launch date targets of the unannounced phones from Samsung including the rumoured Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 Activ (the rugged version of the Galaxy S4) and the Galaxy S4 Zoom (the camera focused variant), in addition to the officially announced Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3 for Europe.

According to the website, the White coloured variant of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 will release in week 20 of this year i.e. between May 13 and 19, while the Black variant will launch between June 17 to 23. The Galaxy Mega 6.3's Black variant is expected to launch in the week starting May 6, while its White version is expected to launch the week starting May 20.

The report pegs the launch of the Galaxy S4 mini in the week starting July 15 in both White and Black colours. This is in-line with an earlier report that suggested that the Galaxy S4 mini will release in July.

The Galaxy S4 Activ, which is reportedly a ruggedised phone based on the Galaxy S4 platform, is also expected to release in the same week in Metallic Orange colour.

Interestingly, the Galaxy S4 Zoom, a smartphone that has been rumoured to feature a 16-megapixel camera has a target launch date between June 3 and June 9 for the Black variant and June 17 to 23 for the White one. The phone's existence was revealed just a day back.

Galaxy S4's new ad

Samsung Galaxy S4's new ad labels iPhone as old

samsung_galaxy_s_iv_vs_iphone_5.jpg
The Samsung launch party seems incomplete without Apple bashing ads and it came as a bit of a surprise that Samsung had not launched any such combative television commercials for Samsung Galaxy S4. Until now.
The Korean smartphone maker has launched a new television commercial that talks about the new features in the Galaxy S4 and mocks Apple iPhone 5. The ad even goes on to state some smartphones (read Galaxy S4) are smarter than others (iPhone 5).
The ad begins with a graduation party taking place and people seem to be enjoying food and jumping into the pool - kids being kids. In the party, the students are shown using the Samsung Galaxy S4, while their parents and teachers (the older lot) are shown using the iPhone.
The television unfolds to demonstrate the Air Gesture feature as the person eating a juicy piece of ribs is able to answer the call by merely waving at the device. Also the pictures clicked at the graduation party are shared between devices using the S Bean functionality of the Samsung Galaxy S4. It further goes on to how the Samsung Galaxy S4 can control an HDTV and recommend TV shows to you.
Samsung has also released a 30 second video that continues with the graduation theme to showcase the eraser shot feature of Samsung Galaxy S4. In this short television commercial, Samsung does not make fun of Apple's iPhone.
Mocking competitive products in a television commercial is not a new concept in the smartphone space. A few days ago, Microsoft has rolled out a new television commercial for Nokia Lumia 920. In this ad, Microsoft seems to be mocking the rivalry between Apple and Samsung to drive home the "Switch to Lumia" message.
However, the current Samsung Galaxy S4 is not as quirky and quick-paced as the Microsoft one.

Android 5.0

Android 5.0 may have to wait as Android 4.3 Jelly Bean spotted in the wild

android-jelly-bean-statue.jpg
Guess the wait for the Android Key Lime Pie gets longer. The latest news reports are suggesting that Google will be rolling out Android 4.3 at Google I/O this year, instead of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie as it was widely expected.
The folks at Android Police have discovered server logs that indicate that Google is currently working on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). As per these server logs, there are various devices running on Android 4.3 build JWR23B. The report also mentions that it has already seem Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 devices running on Android 4.3. Furthermore, the IP addresses of these devices were tracked back to the Google Campus.
Given that Google I/O is just days away and that Android 4.3 has already started cropping in the logs, we might see the search engine giant announce it at this event.
Google had announced Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) in October last year. This new version added features like Photo Sphere, Gesture Typing, multiple user support, Wireless display or Miracast support, amongst others. The most recent update rolled out by the company was in the form of Android 4.2.2, which carries the JDQ39 build number and offers various bug fixes and performance enhancements.
As per data revealed by Google for the month of April, Android 4.1 and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean are now on 25 percent of all Android devices. In the month of March, Jelly Bean's share was 16.5 percent. On the other hand, as per this report, the percentage of devices currently running Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.x) is 29.3 percent, which is a marginal increase of 0.7 percent as compared to the previous month.
The past rumours had suggested that Google will be rolling out Android 5.0, which would be dubbed Key Lime Pie or another dessert starting with the alphabet K at the Google I/O. This version is now being touted to be released later in the year.
Of course it doesn't matter what will be the version number or the name of the next update, but what this new version of Android will bring to the table. So far, there is no word on what new features we can expect in the update.

Optimus GK

LG announces Optimus GK smartphone with 5-inch full-HD display, quad-core processor

LG-Optimus-GK.jpg
LG has announced the Optimus GK, smartphone for the Korean market, that packs in all the features of the LG Optimus G Pro but replaces the huge 5.5-inch screen with a 5-inch one.

Similar to the Optimus G Pro, the Optimus GK's screen is also a 1080p (1080x1920 pixels) one with a pixel density of 440ppi. It's powered by a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, and has 2GB of RAM. The phone will sport a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing one. It will offer 16GB of internal storage expandable up to 64GB via microSD,and come with a 3,100 mAh battery. It will also come with LTE support.

It's interesting to note that LG had released the LG Optimus G Pro in Japan with a 5-inch screen. It might have to do with the reason that a large number of people find 5-inch+ phones difficult to handle.

It's not known if LG would extend the phone to other markets but if it does, then the Optimus GK would directly compete with the Samsung Galaxy S4 as both phones sport similar specifications.

The launch comes at a time when LG is all set to launch the LG Optimus G Pro in the US with carrier AT&T. It had also showcased the phone in India with an expected launch in June.

Rumours related to the existence of the LG Optimus G2, LG's next flagship phone have already started doing the rounds, with a listing on a benchmarks site pointing to the existence of the phone.

Mobiles launched in April 2013

LG Optimus GK specifications:

  • 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 5.5-inch full HD IPS display with 1080x1920 pixels resolution

Google X Android 5.0.1

Google X smartphone with Android 5.0.1 appears in benchmarks

motorola-logo-635.jpg
It seems like the Motorola X smartphone should be hitting the market very soon and will be dubbed Google X.
This revelation is based on a report by Android Headlines via a Japanese blog Rbmen. This report suggests that Motorola X smartphone has made an appearance on the AnTuTu Benchmark results. This smartphone carries the name Google X, which is very similar to Motorola X and hence making the blog believe that these two may actually be the same smartphone.
Another interesting fact that has been unearthed through AnTuTu Benchmark result is that this Google X smartphone will run on Android 5.0.1 (aka Android Key Lime Pie). This means that Google's next version of Android could well be in Beta stages and on track to be launched at the Google I/O, which will be taking place in the month of May.
The alleged Google X smartphone is also reported to run on a processor that clocks up to 1.5GHz. However, it is difficult at this stage to predict whether it is Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, Snapdragon 800 or Tegra 4 that has been deployed in this smartphone. However earlier rumours had suggested that Motorola X smartphone will clock speed to the tunes of 2GHz and have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
Given that Google X has already started popping in benchmark results is also indication that the smartphone might be launched in the near future.
As per past rumours, Motorola X smartphone will be highly customisable, will have a 4,000mAh battery and might be a water-proof device.
Earlier in the month, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt had shared that the smartphones coming up at Motorola are "very, very impressive." Schmidt had also remarked that, the new set of products will be phenomenal and these smartphones should not be termed as just phones, but "Phones-plus".
While Jim Wicks, Design Chief at Motorola was heard saying that "if you like smaller form-factor devices or stock Android, you're going to be excited."
So for now the Motorola X - or Google X - continues to be a mystery but we are sure to get more details in due course.

Galaxy S4 doesn't come with FM radio

Samsung explains why Galaxy S4 doesn't come with FM radio

samsung-s4-635.jpg
Samsung Galaxy S4 was unveiled by the company on 14 March. While the phone boasts high-end specs like a 5-inch full-HD screen with 441 pixels per inch, a 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others, and 2GB of RAM, it received criticism in some quarters for missing out on a rather basic feature: FM radio.
The omission of FM was indeed a strange one from Samsung. While Apple has never shipped an iPhone with built-in FM radio - despite receiving its share of criticism - Samsung's first three flagship devices, and indeed, most other phones, come with FM radio. In that sense, Samsung customers are used to enjoying the feature. There have been complaints since the omission was confirmed after Galaxy S4 was officially unveiled but Samsung was mum on the subject - until now.
Samsung's Facebook page in Russia has made the following announcement on the subject, which was picked up by GSM Arena via Hi-Tech.Mail.Ru.
Our studies show a trend shift of interest to digital broadcasting, specifically - focus on listening to music content in social networks or on the channel YouTube. The flagship model of our products are focused on customers who use digital content, which use modern formats and channels of information consumption. (translated from Russian).
While Samsung may be right in believing that flagship customers tend to be focused on digital content, the fact is, if you take something away from people after they become used to it (in other Galaxy flagships), they are far more likely to complain, than if they never enjoyed the feature in the first place.
Something tells us we haven't heard the last on the Samsung Galaxy S4 FM radio debate. What do you think us of Samsung's decision? Will your decision to buy the Galaxy S4 be impacted by it? Let us know via the comments.

The single SIM variant will be powered by a quad-core processor, while the dual-SIM version will get a dual-core processor. It is expected that Samsung may also release GT-I9195, which will be Samsung Galaxy S4 mini variant that will support LTE.
Earlier news reports have suggested that Samsung will be looking at launching its Galaxy S4 mini shortly after Samsung Galaxy S4 becomes available in a few days time.
The Korean chaebol had unveiled its latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S4 at an unpacked event on March 14, 2013. The Galaxy S4 sports a 5-inch full-HD screen with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions, and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others. It has 2GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX544MP3 triple-core GPU.
The smartphone will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants and will also feature a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front. The Galaxy S4 also offers more camera features including dual-shot, employing the use of both front and back camera, an eraser shot mode to remove people from photos, and a Cinemagram like feature called Cinema Photo, among several other tricks.
The smartphone is expected to be available in US in the week starting April 22, 2013. Telecom operator AT&T has listed 16GB variant of Samsung Galaxy S4 for contract-free price of $640.
